History

Apparently the cat of the hill is from the old days when cars where crap. Your car was allocated a catagory, and it was said to be able to get up those hills.

As to what its all about these days - no idea. I only remember pointless things (o:

Yep, thats the legend I was told as well

I think thats how they used to work it out in the 40s and 50's If a car could get up in its 4th gear then its a 4th category climb etc. I dont know whether its based on much fact but it sounds good.
Nowadays I think they have a formula which takes into account a combination of gradient and length and rarely just one. I am looking forward to having a crack at one or two Big Hors category climbs in France in acouple of weeks. I believe the Joux Plane is H cat and is just outside Morzine. I have also been told that LA blew on that climb a few years back !

4TH easiest - 1st hardHors

4TH easiest - 1st hard

Hors is unclassified which means beyond or harder than 1st. In the polka dot competetion they get more mountains points for cresting a higher categorized climb then for a lesser one.
