The Right Bits

Posted in

So once you've got the frame sorted you need some bits to hang on it...

Groupsets..

Shimano biggest & best...Shimano stuff works simple as that...not as sexy as Campag but reliable and every bike shop stocks it..obviously you'd want a carbon chainset on there..NOT A F**KING TRIPLE or I will have words!

Campag...Think Italian cars..they personify cool but if you had to get your Mrs to Maternity on a wet winter night would you pick a Fiat or a Toyota? I rest my case..

Sram..if the road stuff works as well as my X0 gear then try it..Form&function combined..Plus still got the rarity factor

Wheels ..deep sections preferably carbon (clinchers though)

Componentry...trick as you like, carbon & Ti with a flite Ti Saddle..and Black bar tape please..Whites for pros and posers..

blah...

SRAM who bought out SACHS who were pretty much the people who took the non cassette block to its ultimate evolution with some superb builds. Still use their chains - their link pins could be used in HG chains, and now they use those power link affairs - which are handy enough.

I would go Campag for a high end bike, for a low end bike, japanese. Past experience says that the Campag stuff wears less quickly - no no not chains, I mean stuff like axles in break hoods and breaks... they are brass over PTFE types. Maybe those days are gone - depends on your budget and priorities really I guess... that and remember pawing the glass of the Campag display case at the local bike shop back in the late eighties.

I am nurturing a 'need' for a track bike to minimise the technicalities (something that goes against my choices in just about every other area of my world). Albeit one with breaks, so no purist here.

If you want silly prices and dubious userbase - Mavic? It would certainly be original... if a little 'French'.

I think Dan hit it on the head previously with its the replacement part costs that will leave you wincing.

Agreed on the white - thats for £90 'racers' from taiwan which appear to have at best parcel packaging binding wrapped around the bars in place of bar tape, or for professionals.

White shoes are okay - says he - but maybe in retrospect *only* if your feet are much smaller than mine.

Campag - Shimano alternative debate

Forget reliability, cost etc. You only have to ask who you want to be making the bits on your pride and joy.

Shimano- Mr Shinizuko, who wears a white lab coat, has Jam Jar spectacles, lives in a tokyo high rise flat, drives a Honda Jazz, drinks tea, works 60 hours a week, no time for friends, and has to eat his lunch alone at his work pod which is noodles from a cardboard box.

Hobbies: Eating cold raw fish eyes, Karaoke (which he takes very very seriously), Sumo wrestling, video games and watching middle aged Japanese women dress up as school girls

Campagnolo- Made by a man called Giancarlo, wearing Armani loafers, has an eye for all things beautiful, charms gorgeous women, takes lunch with his equally stylish friends where he drinks Chianti and sits in the sun for 2 hours, and goes home in an Alfa Romeo or Maserati. Treats everything he makes with an eye for art and beauty.

Hobbies: Football, being stylish, making love to beautiful grateful women, drinking wine, Ferraris and motor racing.

I rest my case

and order placed!
Pinarello Paris with Dura Ace (Not triple), Ksyrium ES wheels, FSA K force stem and shallow bars and a Thoork saddle but one small error...

I went for the white tape - Bugger Bugger Bugger.

Dan, please don't send subs back, I will endeavour to change spec.

Thanks to you all for your time and humour whilst candidly advising, much appreciated.

A fine bike

Green with Envy, A fine fine bike.
I am off to Italy in about 5 weeks and am going to pick up the same bike whilst I am there, as they are only about 500 euros complete over there. (I hope you didnt pay much more than that) ;)

Dont worry about the white bar tape, provided your hands are clean it stays as white as the day you got it.
It also gives you a great excuse to have an immensly satisfying, prima-dona Italian style, foot stamping tantrum whenever you get a flat, and you can demand Pete or Al fixes it for you. So you dont get your hands mucky.
Maybe also try askiing the Mrs to flip your oily chain back on for you before you ride, (they do really enjoy to be made to feel a part of your hobby and relish the opportunity to be involved in helping you on your way.(honest). Mind you I would hide the cable snips if you do, as those Dura Ace brakes cables can be snipped in seconds, and may be required as you pass Thorncliffes at 70 mph.

Well done, Joking aside you were always going to get a great bike at that level, I hope you enjoy the hell out of it ! (And if you dont, I am sure it would fit me, very nicely :) You only need to buy about three more at a similar price point and you will be rivalling Dave on the spend per cyclist ratio

I Think Im Jealous!?!?!?
