Some info' I found re' carbo loading, sounds great!!! Also I recommend Steak, Why? Just Because!!!
Carb load
"The goal is to start the race with good glycogen reserves, so athletes should really concentrate on their food intake during the week before the race and rest 1-2 days before the race to really stock-up and increase their carbohydrate intake," says nutritionist Karen Reid at the English Institute of Sport.
Carbohydrate is really important. Typically, athletes may need 10g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight – that's an awful lot of carbohydrate which can't always be sourced from potatoes, pasta and bread because they may be too bulky. Instead, athletes can look to more compact carbohydrate sources such as sweets and sugary drinks. For instance, 100g of jelly babies can give you 80g of carbohydrate – the same as a portion of pasta!"

Hope this helps others who are wondering like me what the heck Carbo Loading is about?!?!??!
And Finally........ Al' Suggests GUINNESS of course :)

Correct me if I am wrong but
I think its all about tricking your body into storing a the maximum amount of glycogen before an event isnt it ? by having a low carb diet for a week before the event and depleting your glycogen stores completely and then boosting them with a high carb intake 24 hours before the event, therefore your muscles store the maximum amount.
Thats why they have those massive pasta partys the day before the London marathon I believe ?
Carb loading is much much more relevent to the likes of marathon runners, who have a finite amount of muscle fuel to get them round between 2-4 ish hours of hard exercise. Obviously they can top up a little with energy drink if they can get hold of some at the feed stations as they pass, but they cant re-fuel substantially on carbs any other way, so a bit like a car when you are out of fuel you are out of fuel and you stop !
Dont forget though, before you put down your bagel that in cycling events and particularly the more social Fondo type of event that you are refuelling all the time at the food stops, with flapjacks, butties, cakes, bananas etc. A luxury that marathon runners do not have. You really are unlikely to hit the wall due to muscle glycogen depletion, especially if you eat as many of the flapjacks as I did last year ;) The most likely failure I reckon would be not to drink enough electrolytes and cramp up later on.
(And Syd, that is "electrolytes" which are in most energy drinks not "trilobytes" which are nasty little prehistoric crustasceans, before you go and try the Natural history museum for sponsorhip ;)
This concludes your lecture from Dr dan, now I must get back to my practice where someone has got a hoover attachment stuck up their ar*e
Don't worry Syd!
Syd, your training has been exemplary, your fitness level has soared to new heights and legs are looking good (Ask Dave Lee). You will sail around this event and your only trouble will be finding the time and patience to wait for your less powerful and fit VCr's. Me included.
An indian meal with all the trimmings on the saturday night will be all the prep you need... along with 6 of Al's Guiness!.
Go hard or Go Home!
now im scared!!!
Why the dickings has DL been looking at my legs?????
I don't think I actually want to know, too much laughing gas I reckon

Cabo loading
Just read Dan's arsticle on this subject. Yes the old starve then load was a method used by the Aussie marathon runner Rob de Castella (Deek to his mates)however although he did some amazing times the method has since been considered controversial. I am advised by my personal dietitian (wife Pam)that for our level of performance we just need to stuff our faces for the 3 days prior to an endurance event such as the GF. Yes pasta, rice, spuds, cous cous, lentils are all bursting with the carbo's we need. Paul's Indian suggestion is not far off the mark especially combined with some dahl soup. Although I must add that the after smells are not conducive to a team event. But don't eat anything that your body is not used to otherwise you'll end up with bad guts.Alan's Guiness loading should be kept until after the event since alcohol prevents the absorption of glycogen to the liver. Eating a high carbo meal within 20mins of finishing is supposed to be a good idea and will aid recovery however after all the endurance runs and cycles that I have done you are not in the mood for being sensible and a gallon of best bitter will numb anything. Hydration is the key on the day and if your body is used to it add some Isostar or similar although personally I prefer just water as I can get more down and eat, eat, eat. Good luck.
"Carbo" loading
Of course Cabo loading went out with the arc!!
sounds like good info
I'm stocking up on carbs!!! Pasta Pasta and more Pasta, Rice Pudd' for Deserts (apparetnly Russ's top tip)
Steak too on my menu for the week!!!
Dans theory of flap jacks on the hoof are going to keep me racing to the next stop :)
Berr @ the Finish!!!!

STEAK !!!
Odd choice, great for recovery protein, but not a good pre ride thing I dont think, doesnt it take over 24hrs to fully digest a big steak ? Beer at the finish is a given ;)
I think Jons advice of not doing anything unusual to your intake is the best of all. There is a time and a place for experimenting with radical changes to your diet and a few days before your biggest cycling event to date is not not one of them !
You eat pretty well usually dont you ? In which case I wouldnt worry.
Pasta in Nant Peris
As last year, Pam has kindly offered to provide a pasta lunch served al fresco at our little abode in Nant. Can somebody tell how many people to cater for please. Ta!
Pre-empting Dan
And before Dan gets in - al fresco is n't anything to do with Alan getting fresh!
Pasta 4 SYD Please!!!!
Jon at last count 10-12 I think?!??!
Tar Pam :)

Nice one
Yes please, that'd be most welcome. However this year can we go with a Shiraz instead as I found the Cabernet a little harsh for my pallet. I guess it'll be 10 ish, however maybe best to allow for 35 people, if we allow Alan to help himself
Ok Shiraz it is!
Pam says that you must finish the bottle before you leave - apparently it's really good for hydration and endurance, but then you know that!
If Sundays weather forecast
If Sundays weather forecast is as bad as it looks on the long range predictions then I may just sit it out in your back yard and finish off a whole case of wine ! ......HIC......BURP Lets face it, I cant afford to shrink anymore in the rain !
