TT START AND FINISH?

Where exactly does our new TT course start and end?
Judging by the time I did on Sunday Morning I`m hoping it is a least 3 miles out!:[.

Going out of Denbigh ,past Brookhouse mill up hill to lay by on left. Start is by low flying cow sign, ride to cattle market round about and retrace finish is at end of old road/lay by /farm entrance about 500m before finish. if it takes any longer than 23mins your not riding fast enough.

Thanks for that boost of confidence Alan, I might of saved a minute then.
I`ll have to put it in the big ring next time, look forward to trailing behind you all season Alan

23 mins is that for two laps or one ?

Dont worry Gary,
I am looking forward to being crap at time trialling all season.
However I now feel the weight of the world has been unburdened from my shoulders as recently we went for a scientific Vo2 max and lactate lab test. which has thrown a lifeline to my rocky self confidence.

Apparently I am utterly and totally genetically pre-destined to be unable to time trial, even if I lived to be a thousand I will always be shite at it :) Sadly I am physiologically and irreversably premapped to do road races and hill climbs. The doctor said so. (Also it appears that I am totally normal and its you time triallers that are freaks !)
I was also intrigued to find out whether I have a pre-designated physiological reason why I am unable to ride in the rain. I was expecting to be diagnosed with pourous skin condition or some genetic water intolerance, but alas, it appears that I am just a big girls blouse who's too idle to get his arse out of bed when its raining, bummer :(

was reading about lactcate threshold bla de blah, the basic calc' is 220 - age x85-90% isn't it
how clsoe is that do your lab results?
i bet that would of saved you 100+ quid?

another thing you've discovered....
your more scared of rain than needles!

220 less your age is referring to Maximum heart rate and has nothing to do with Lactate threshold.

220 less your age is notoriously as about as accurate as a scud missile. i.e not very. Your max heart rate can be anything up to 30 beats either side of that formula. 220 less your age was decided on as a very rough and safe guideline for Joe Average, a safe figure to give people that they dont want dying on their treadmill by doing a maximal HR test. 220 - age would give Alan a MHR of 178. And his is about the same as mine (197). The testing we did was not really designed to find MHR even though we got pretty close and it felt very painful particulalry as we were breathing into a gas analyser via a breathing tube, plus they were taking a blood sample every 3 mins.
It was intended to found out Lactic acid levels and to give a V02 max figure. All jolly scientific and groovy.

I was only joking about the time, but the big ring might help!
as for the lactic threshold /watt results it just makes training more painfull.

Have they given you targets to achieve? like training in zones.
P.S Who`s got any cheap Aero wheels to sell? :)

Dan's picture
Submitted by Dan on Tue, 18/03/2008 - 11:16am.

Alans got a disc wheel for sale, but I believe it has a Raleigh Grifter Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub gear instead of a cassette freehub on ;) You just need to find somewhere on your bars to fit the twist grip gear selector.

In terms of the extensive and scientific Vo2 Max / lactate testing we did connected to various bits of high technology, we have discovered that : -

1. Alan is big and powerful and would like a tiny bit more VO2

2. I am light and and less powerful and would like a tiny bit less Lactic acid

3. Pauls got a expensive, cool red, black and white bike :)

Genius !

Until the time comes when GM science can produce a "Dolly the sheep style" Liddle/Overson love child in a Petri dish (using DNA I hasten to add !) to go out and rip up the UCI pro tour. Then we are advised to work on the strengths we have.

On a serious point it was quite educational and yes there is plenty of practical training advice that you can use from the results. Its suprising what your mind tells you is your optimium work rate that you can sustain, and what science proves that your body really can tolerate. Its worth doing.
The guy who does the testing is a current world indoor rowing record holder, so he knows his stuff and can advisse on some proper training advise, and doesnt just provide you with a sheet of meaningless data with which to take down the disco and try and impress the girls with, before heading home on your own again :)

Because if you do you will realise what slackers we really are!

plus you have to accept you aren't training properly if you ride with anyone else...to be dedicated to train at your level you pretty much have to be on your own (or with your genetic twin vo2 max wise!)

just chill out and ride your bike! stop and stare at fields, hills and forests!

ps did the course in 25 mins with a teastop!...new TT bike is fast!

FFS Never stare at fields ! by all means stare at lapdancers, tramps, people with unfortunate disfigurements, cleavages and expensive cars / bikes, these are all socially acceptable to stare at.. but fields ! they dont do anything other that grow grass slowly, you'll just get arrested for worrying sheep.

Feel free to glance occassionally and casually (but never suggestively or wantonly) at fields but dont stare at them its rude.

By the way, Staring is only one small step away from ogling.... you dirty boy !

Wish you'd included the bit about this guy being the world INDOOR rowing champion before!....now either this is some kind of sprint rowing in a swimming pool(which is ok-ish) or more likely this fruitcake is attatched to a rowing machine...which obviously is what elevated him to hero status for Dan!

don't get me wrong I admire the dedication...there is just something plain wrong (Dan) about furtively scurrying off to your garage to train!

I just tried staring at a field from my office window, Its a crap way to spend 5 minutes. I hadnt realised there was some kids playing in the field, and now the police are here.

Cheers mate :( thats the last time I listen to you ! See you in 6 to 9

Nothing wrong with passing some time in your garage. I have some good music on, and posters on the walls of my favourite fields.

I have the "FOXY FIELDS" 2008 calender just in front of my turbo trainer.
July 08 is the field off to the right of the westbound B4381.......WOW shes a beauty ! I could stare at her molehills all day !

hmmm....Is it possible to run off into the sunset with a field ?, sounds tricky.

I cant wait to get my mower out tonight and give my lawn a Brazilian.... ooo, saucy !

Dangerous I know, but.
Lac' threshold, is from what I can gather 85-90% of 220 - age

or am i still off the mark? is it helpfull to know whilst looksing at said fields.

oo look

I am exposing myself to abuse here by answering your question... Geek, I can already hear them saying.

As I understand, your muscles produce lactic acid during exercise, which is a muscle poison and is also the stuff that makes your legs hurt and fatigue and go slower. Up until a point your body produces lactic acid very steadily and can get rid of it at the same rate. All of a sudden and at a given effort the lactic levels increases very fast as your body fails to shift it fast enough. This point is your lactic threshold. It doesnt relate to any set percentage. Some people it happens very low in their range, and some people at the very top end of their range. The only way to find out is have a lactate test, where they put you on a turbo-trainer and ramp the effort up every 3 mins, at each 3 minute interval they take a blood sample from your ear, and then the computer analyses how much lactic acid is present.

Dont get it confused with Anaerobic threshold which is different again.

But as Justin wisely says unless you are a OCD sufferer like me, then just ride your bike for fun and stay away from highly charged erotic encouters with farmland

Using the above formula we have established that when Syd was 90% of his age (35) i.e 31 yrs 6 months he started lactating at an alarming rate.

I suggest you take this fact to a Doctor and see what he suggests, (other than hormone treatment)

When are we going to see this circus sideshow party piece then Syd ?

Last night Dan and I suffered so you would all know how fast the new 10 is
On the way out it felt easy (plenty of time to gaze wistfully into green fields .) arriving at the roundabout in 11:25 but the we found out why it had been easy there was cold head wind all the way back getting to the end in 25:38 I think at about 90% of tt effort but I did have Dan helping. How will you do?

Thank you Alan for bringing this thread back to a more mature level.

Roll on the 1st May for what will be a PB for us all.

Congratulations in advance to you all!

On a more serious note, I think Justin's comments about training alone are very accurate. However, we can achieve this together if we were to do "Hill Reps" at Rhuallt for an hour or so.

Meet on Friday at 2pm at The Smithy, do an hour of hill reps in our specific zones... then go for a ride or go home or go to the Smithy for an Easter Ale!

Comments?

Paul if you buy a fast enough Bike you won`t have to do hill reps!(Thats what I tell myself anyway)
What is your TT bike for this season?

Paul Rutt's picture
Submitted by Paul Rutt on Wed, 19/03/2008 - 1:20pm.

The Pinarello... unless I can get my time to a respectable level and I might just treat myself.

My PB on the 9 last year was 24.40. My thoughts were that if I could manage sub 23 then a Planet X would be on order. However, that may be a bridge too far this year so let's wait and see.

Of course, with the new circuit those times sort of go out of the window so I will reassess in July after La Marmotte. Maybe by then I will just be doing weights in Syd's garage having thrown the bike off some Alpine hill!

Yes I have a comment to the Hill rep idea - You are a mental

That's what I like about this sport:

So many bloody opinions all of which are right!

Too many people are talking to me about Hill Repeats for it to be folly.

I am going to follow a strict 6 week programme (as suggested by Dave Lloyd and Jonny Marine) and will advise you of the results.

Hopefully, that advice will be demonstrated by keeping up with you and Alan up a nasty hill!

Sensitive me, never ! You only pick on me coz I am small :)

Seriously though, my mistake, you are correct, I got my wires crossed. I hadn't realised you were on about training for the Marmotte there, thought we were still on about PB's for Time trials. I should concentrate more. If you want to train for hills that then I guess hill reps are the way forward being as that there arent many super long hills round here. It just sounds too "ouch" for my taste.
Being as that it was my mistake, I shall waive 50% of the fee for the original advice ;)
Give me a shout on Friday when you have finished your up and downs and I will meet you all afterwards ;) when you are all f****d, bit like you lot did to me and Al last night...Gits. Was feeling ok till that w****r driver nearly killed me pulling out of that junction on 70 deg's hill.
