Wild Wales
What a great ride!
Alan, Martin, Dave, Jan, Andy, Jonny, Chris, Me, Simon, Phil, Graham and Vicky (Tandem), Richard Lee, Paul Crabb. Apologies if I've forgotten anybody... "Simon's friend with a Landrover"
Route here http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2203017 By the way - a neat google ap.
Tony Lord was a sight cycling around the carpark trying to scrounge a pair of shorts!
Set off at 8.23 and overtook the Captain and Stoker on the first climb, a nasty long one made all the worse for knowing it would be repeated later in the day albeit in reverse.
Regrouped at the first control after some eager riders had got lost! Mentioning no names except a Powerful man with a bloody GPS???
Simon and Phil at this juncture decided to leave our company and make their own way - we were obviously too slow for them.
We stuck together for the remainder of the leg with the exception of Dave who was probably saving some poor soul or staying away from Andy's teeth (or lack of them) in case of some derogatory remark regarding his professional skills!
Thw choice of roads was superb and the pain of the climbs was repaid by the stunning vistas of Dolgellau and Barmouth from the mountain tops, they were wonderful.
Meanwhile, the still keen, Paul Crabb was sent ahead to the second control to ready the teas (and good cake). Richard Lee had had a bad time to here but is made of sturdy stuff and carried on with a 39/25 - no wonder he was struggling with these hills!
The last climb up from Trawsfynnydd is not nice especially with 70 odd miles already done but a sunny afternoon and a tail wind ensured we all made it together - nearly... Hands up - I was last!
A fast descent and then a chaingang into Bala along the A494 ably led by yours truly, who had clearly been saving himself for the sprint finish ;-) Arriving back at 4.09pm, which at 9 minutes after the final control opened it must have been a swift ride. We beat the Rhyl Lads anyway, and that's all that mattered.
What time did Dave and the tandem get back?
Again a great ride, good company and a lovely pint of Brakespeare in The Swan! Cheers Guys!
yes it was a great ride and the weather was kind.We were at the second control when you were finishing! finished just before 7 and I think we were the first tandem home.
Looking like the side of a house (preferred name Cartref) after a spell off serious training Paul you put in a performance befitting a man who has gained so much confidence over the year that you fear no hill and no one. I overheard one comment as you flew past us all on the finishing straight "that man has the strength of ten men". I agree. Tosser!
Much appreciated comments but we know it's you doing the posting as it says "jonboy" at the head of your post. There really is no need to sign off as well.
Cartref x
Sounds like at last the Sun / cycle gods were on your side!!!
just me and Phil L meandered to Ruthin and back, via for me anyway some new rough lanes.
Back in time for din din's
Your obviously getting more techy now mr Cartref!!!
!!Wot No Bar!!
Missed you all at the second chk point by 5 mins after taking the road to Porthmadoc (holiday homing instinct!), which extended into 40 mins at Bala - good job I was in the fastest chaingang of the day otherwise the time would have been even more damning.
