Cafe Stops to be cancelled????

Posted in

Café stops on a Sunday ride are a great tradition, and for many are considered as a way to refuel, socialise, get some warmth back in the hand and feet, and possibly a chance to dry off. But are they really a benefit??? Well here are three physiological reasons to keep riding….

1) Muscle Stiffness

Ever stopped riding without a warm-down? What do your legs feel like a little later on? Well, chances are in the café stop, you are not only not warming down, but you are then sitting in a fairly cramped space, this will not promote clearance of waste products from the working muscle, and in worst case situations will also cause blood pooling in the legs. This will often mean that when you get up to climb back on your bike, your legs will feel very heavy and stiff. This will mean that it will often take 20-30 mins before you feel you are riding effectively again. This of course could also have something to do with the metabolic imbalances you have just caused where the body is trying to promote carbohydrate storage to aid recovery.

2) Carbohydrate storage

As soon as you stop exercising, the body moves into restoration mode, trying to restore its resting balance. One of the major responses at the end of exercise is to enhance the activity of glycogen synthase. These are the enzymes that are responsible for carbohydrate resynthesis and storage back into the muscle. The activity of these enzymes is stimulated for about 2 hours following exercise. The problem on a Sunday morning is that if you are stopping for about 30 mins, before starting to ride you will cause a severe metabolic imbalance, where the body is trying to restore the muscle carbohydrate (glycogen), but the same fuel is needed to produce the muscular power to push the pedals round. So the stimulus you are providing to the body is confused, and not one you are attempting to replicate for a race situation. This will also completely suppress any possible chance of fat burning, as the body will need to metabolise additional carbohydrate to overcome this situation.

3) Fat burning

Often, one of the reasons for the long Sunday ride is to promote fat burning. To do this the intensity needs to be low, and the duration long. In order to effectively mobilise fat as a fuel, you need to have been riding for a minimum of 45 minutes. Therefore if you stop 2 hours into a ride, before completing a further 2 hours, your ability to fully use fat as a fuel effectively falls from 3 ¼ hrs to just 1 ½ hrs in the 4 hour total.

So all in all, you need to think about the reason you are stopping, and do the social reasons outweigh the physiological justification for that warm cup of tea?

hmm, wish I knew whether this post was tongue in cheek, or posted to create a debate.
You havent actually stated what your preferences are Paul ? Just the facts against.

VC MELYD IN SERIOUS FORUM POST SHOCKER!

That's the Sun Headline!

He's right you know folks...best bet is to venture off road eh Paul...none of the wicked temptations for you there...anyone mentioning the Coed Y Brenin lovelies see me after class!

saying that I expect Syd will back you up for different reasons....though he will be denied the chance to cadge Mail on Sunday freebies on the Orme!

I dont mind myself...suppose it would add 8 miles to a ride but back same time as stopping...I enjoy the social aspect but that first 10 minutes back in the saddle is yuck!

You been reading training manuals again Mr R?

DAN SITS ON FENCE SHOCKER!

Don,t suppose it affects him much as he's only out on the sunny days!

CASTLE CAFE BUST DUE TO FLAPJACK MOUNTAIN

Paul Rutt's picture

Actually Gentlemen it is a serious post.
We all acknowledge the pain we feel when restarting after a cafe stop - not nice. It's quite interesting to have the knowledge/science behind it all. That's my thought.

As for my opinion: well I can put up with the pain but the fat loss argument is very compelling and would motivate me personally to carry on riding, especially if that can be done at a low (lazy) intensity and not hanging on Al's wheel with my tongue hanging out at 180bpm all the way to Denbigh!

However, I also recognise that I would sorely missed at Cafe stop for a number of reasons:

1. Profits in Castle Cafe Flapjack would plummet
2. Lack of photographs of hairy holes would reduce the mirth factor of our cafe stops

Or then again, I might not be missed at all...

If its a heated debate

If its a heated debate needed this is just the subject to kick it off.
I guess we all have a preference regarding the cafe stop question.
For me, Its nice on a pleasant sunny summers day to take a break in a nice setting like the Brenig etc with a brew. It makes the ride a more social affair and its probably the reason most people ride with a club.
However in the winter when its wet and cold I am usually happier to keep on going, as it does seem pointless to be huddled up generally cold and wet, in a street cafe somewhere 40 miles from home, It makes the last part of the ride considerably less pleasant and miserable than if you didnt stop because your legs start to seize up and you feel much colder, and generally I think the instinct is when you've had a stop is

"right my legs are stiff I am cold and miserable lets just get home as soon as possible coz I aint enjoying this anymore".

And we do this why ?? in the name of being "SOCIAL" and "TRADITIONAL" I dont know ? the jurys out for me on the benefits.

However, on the flip side,
I completely understand and relate to the thinking that "Sunday should not be a selfish training session, its the backbone of any club, its a social ride, if you dont like it ride on your own you miserable git"

Riding on your own, or skipping a cafe stop and continuing shouldnt offend anyone and everyone gets what they want without compromising their own enjoyment of the ride.
Personally on a Sunday I wouldnt want to ride on my own because I genuinally value the company enough to go into a caff with the majority without my bottom lip coming out.

my two peneth

if the stops a brief one and not too long winded, my legs don't scream at me so much. If it's lousy weather I prefer to just get the ride done and have a brew / cake at home. Sunny days, (we do have some) theres nowt better than a brew, cake, gossip and a rest.

As it may have been noticed I'm pretty much a 1 o'clock man so no stop for me is over all best, but when as I presume it will change to 8.30 starts in the spring / summer then cafe stops fine.

was that 3 penneth?
typical me,me, me ;)

I'm guessing El Presidente is having a quiet day!!!

The Power likes his cafe stop

Paul Rutt's picture

After last night's ride the cafe stop was discussed at length with Dan summarising well in his post.

I know Alan likes an Eccles cake, Jan also likes a stop to refuel and because I like both those members then I would feel obliged to keep them company.

However, I would tend to do without, especially when it is a shortish (50 miles) ride and the weather somewhat inclement.

The beautiful rest at Llyn Brenig a few months back was glorious. Sadly we have a long wait before we can enjoy such sunshine.

Oh, by the way.... take a look at this little epic.

Have a nice afternoon.

I'm all for burning fat

bring on the epics!
